Driving Landonâs car was a rush I wouldnât soon forget, but the sight of the man himself walking out of an old neighborhood haunt with his sunglasses on and his sleeves pushed back to reveal his tanned forearms made my heart race without warning. I expected that reaction during sex. I expected it when I was driving a powerful car. Iâd even anticipated it after seeing him for the first time in years. But feeling it now could only mean one thing: I was falling for him again.
Ugh! Howâd I let that happen?
He crawled into the driverâs seat Iâd vacated and held up the brown paper bag bearing the deliâs logo. âGot all your old favorites here.â
It was unnerving to be with a man I didnât really know anymore, yet knew so well.
âI get the feeling youâre trying to seduce me with food.â
He laughed while a group of teens stopped short of the deliâs door to admire his ride.
Landon waved at them before peeling out of the parking lot.
âDoes it ever get old?â I asked, settling in. âBeing admired like that.â
âThey were admiring the car,â he said, stroking the leather steering wheel. âNot me or my accomplishments.â
I tipped my head back, watching him shift gears. âBut the car wouldnât be possible without the accomplishments. None of it would. Isnât that why guys like you buy cars like this, to announce to the world that youâve accomplished something big?â
âNever thought about it like that,â he admitted, lowering the volume on a classic Bob Seger tune weâd both loved in high school. âItâs a symbol of success, for sure. Long after people have forgotten me and my name, what I did for my team, Iâll still have little mementos of my glory days, like this one.â
âYou ever think about it?â I asked, trying to understand the man heâd become. âWhat itâll be like when you have to retire?â
âSure, I think about it. Iâm not a kid anymore.â
âSo?â I pressed, knowing it was probably none of my business. âWhat will you do?â
He pulled into a small clearing with a dirt parking lot that overlooked a man-made lake. Weâd always loved this spot, so I wasnât surprised heâd chosen to take me here.
He cut the engine and sighed. âWhat will I do?â he asked, removing his seat belt. âIâve always loved the game, so maybe Iâll get into coaching or open a facility to train kids.â
I smiled at the picture he painted. âYou still love kids, huh?â Heâd always helped out with the kidsâ football teams when he was in high school, assisting the coaches any way he could, just because he said he loved seeing the kids fall in love with the sport the way he had.
âSure.â
âWhy donât you have any of your own then?â It suddenly occurred to me I was making a lot of assumptions. While I hadnât heard about a baby mama in the news, didnât mean there wasnât one. And damn if that thought didnât crush me.
